What is an Immigration Physical?

An immigration physical, also known as a medical examination or a green card medical exam, is a mandatory health screening required by the U.S. government for individuals seeking to immigrate to the United States or adjust their immigration status. This examination is designed to ensure that applicants do not have any health conditions that could pose a threat to public health or safety in the United States.

The immigration physical must be conducted by a designated civil surgeon approved by USCIS. At Evergreen Urgent Care, we have USCIS-approved civil surgeons on staff who are qualified to perform these examinations and complete the necessary documentation.

Why Do You Need an Immigration Physical?

There are several reasons why you might need to undergo an immigration physical:

The primary purpose of the immigration physical is to protect public health by identifying any medical conditions that could pose a risk to the U.S. population or require extensive medical treatment. It's an essential step in ensuring the health and safety of both immigrants and current U.S. residents

Applying for a Green Card: If you're applying for permanent residency in the United States (commonly known as a Green Card), an immigration physical is a required part of the application process.
Adjusting Immigration Status: If you're already in the United States and seeking to change or adjust your immigration status, you may need to complete an immigration physical.
Refugee or Asylum Status: Those applying for refugee or asylum status in the United States are typically required to undergo a medical examination.
Certain Nonimmigrant Visas: Some nonimmigrant visa categories may require a medical examination, especially if you plan to stay in the U.S. for an extended period.
Adoption: If you're adopting a child from another country, the child may need to undergo a medical examination before entering the United States.

  2. Bring Identification: You'll need to provide a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license.
  3. Vaccination History: If possible, obtain a copy of your immunization records. If you don't have complete records, don't worry – we can perform tests to check your immunity or determine which vaccinations are needed to complete the USCIS requirements.
  4. Payment: Be prepared to pay for the examination. We accept various forms of payment, including cash, credit cards, and some insurance plans. Contact us beforehand to discuss payment options.
  5. Interpreter: If you're not comfortable communicating in English, you must bring an interpreter to assist you during the examination. We do not provide interpreter services.

Common Health-Related Grounds of Inadmissibility

immigration physicals

During the immigration physical, the civil surgeon will be looking for certain health conditions that could potentially make an applicant inadmissible to the United States. These include:

  1. Communicable Diseases of Public Health Significance: This includes active tuberculosis, infectious syphilis, gonorrhea, and infectious leprosy, among others.
  2. Physical or Mental Disorders with Associated Harmful Behavior: This includes conditions that have caused or are likely to cause harmful behavior.
  3. Drug Abuse or Addiction: Current drug abuse or addiction can be grounds for inadmissibility
  4. Failure to Present Documentation of Required Vaccinations: Applicants must either provide proof of required vaccinations or receive them as part of the immigration physical process.

It's important to note that having one of these conditions doesn't automatically disqualify you from immigration. In many cases, waivers or treatment options may be available. Our civil surgeons at Evergreen Urgent Care can provide guidance and resources if any health-related issues arise during your examination.

After Your Immigration Physical

Once your examination is complete, the civil surgeon will provide you with a sealed envelope containing your completed Form I-693. Do not open this envelope – it must remain sealed for submission to USCIS. The form is typically valid for two years from the date of the civil surgeon's signature.

You'll submit this sealed envelope along with your other immigration application materials to USCIS. Keep a copy of the form for your records before submitting it.
